The Cypriot Branch of the European Citizens Association was hosted by the European Commission in Brussels for a two-day visit on 7-9 of June 2026, focusing on issues of preparedness, organised by the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus.
The programme on the 8th of June, included visits and briefings with key EU institutions and officials focusing on security, preparedness and defence. The delegation was first briefed by Mr. Christian Berger Director of the EEAS Crisis Response Centre on the centre’s objectives and mandate, while the participants later toured the European External Action Service (EEAS) Crisis Response Centre and the EU Situation Room, which provide 24/7 global monitoring and early warning capabilities.
The visit then continued with a session on the EU defence policy, delivered by Mr. Evangelos Voyiatzis from the Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DEFIS), highlighting recent initiatives aimed at strengthening Europe’s defence capabilities, enhancing cooperation among Member States and reinforcing the Union’s overall preparedness and resilience. Ms Helena Hinto, Member of Cabinet Commissioner Apostolos Tzizikostas charge of Sustainable Transport and Tourism, followed with her presentation on Military mobility and the plans for the new Regulation to be adopted by the EU.
The delegation then met with Mr. Polyvios Eliofotou, Cabinet Expert of Commissioner Costas Kadis in charge of Fisheries, and discussed the topics of Oceans, fisheries and relevant challenges faced at sea. Lastly, Mr Zacharias Giakoumis, Head of Unit – Communication, events and briefings of the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), presented to the group the work of the DG on European Civil Protection-RESCEU issues and Humanitarian Aid Operations.
All sessions were followed by interesting discussions on current European security, crisis preparedness and defence developments, bringing together academics, researchers, professionals and members of the community. Throughout the visit, the delegation was accompanied by the Head of Press of the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, Mr. Athanasios Athanasiou.
The visit fostered meaningful dialogue on the future of European security and defence policies, highlighting the importance of collaborative policymaking, institutional transparency and active civic engagement.
